Based in New Haven, Connecticut, Lujo Bar is a small business that produces scented shower steamers. As a designer at MSLK, a beauty, and cosmetic-focused branding agency, Lujo Bar tasked us to redesign its packaging and reposition ourselves for the retail space. Through compiling and presenting market, competitive, and design research, we chose a design that met the objectives of being applicable across an 8-scent product suit. In addition, we met our clients' goals of conveying the experiential nature of the product and communicating the brands' unique standout qualities (being woman and minority-owned, phthalate-free, small batch created). The transformation processes included:
-
Trading plastic packaging for cardstock.
-
Implementing storytelling methods that spanned all sides of the box.
-
Creating interaction by allowing the customer to smell the product while looking at it on the shelf.
This design earned a GDUSA American Package Design Award and the 2022 Indigo Bronze Design Award.
My specific contributions to the project included:
-
Testing the initial product samples to provide observations on opportunities to improve the product
-
Conducting competitor, design, and trend audits
-
Compiling market and design research into a client-facing deck and presenting the information to the client
-
Providing ideation on proposed targeted design directions
-
Working with a team of creative directors and a co-designer to lay out information on the packaging die-line
-
Collaborating with co-designer to provide iterations on typography treatments and placement of the information
-
Selecting Pantone swatches to be utilized for the individual scents
